competition rules

All Assignment Competitions have been completed for this Season

Assignment subjects for 2008/2009 season:  

Manx Seascapes, Night Scenes, Transport, Atmosphere

Changes to the Competition Rules are shown in this colour ink.

Immediately after all competitions, any member who has been awarded a placing from "Commended" upwards in the PRINT or DIGITAL sections is asked to send a copy of the image(s) by e-mail to the webmaster for inclusion on the website. The size of the image required is 1024 pixels on the longest side at a resolution of 72 ppi (pixels per inch) and saved as JPEG at level 12. Members who are unable to send a copy by e-mail should hand the print itself to the Webmaster.

Additionally, any member who has an image which hasn't been placed but which they would like to see in their personal gallery on the website, should also take the above action.

Important Note

Whilst every care is taken with entries, no responsibility can be accepted by the Isle of Man Photographic Society for any loss or damage that may occur. All entries are, therefore, submitted at the owner’s own risk.

Judges’ decisions are final as are those of the Committee.

 

Monthly Print, Slide and Digital Competitions

1.      Entrants must be fully paid up members of the Society.

2.      All photographs must have been taken by the entrant.

3.      It is permissible for prints to be professionally made and mounted.

4.      The maximum number of entries in any section is three.

5.      All entries must be titled.

6.     Member’s names must only appear on slide boxes, print and CD containers.

7.      All prints to be mounted with the exception of Small Prints.

8.    Mounts may be any size  up to 20”x16” [50.7 x 40.6 cms] with no minimum size. For ease and uniformity of display, however, it would be preferred if only two sizes of mounting boards were to be used ….20”x16” or  16”x12”. (Prints may be any size in excess of 7.5” x  5”)

9.     Prints may be flat mounted (i.e. placed on top of the card / board mounts) or window mounted (i.e. placed under card / board frames). The final thickness of the mount and picture must not exceed 4mm.            

10.  All print entries must have a stiff backing the same size as the mount (if window mounted) and there must be no tape or adhesive present on any external surface area in order to avoid damage to other prints.           

11. Members who intend to submit any of their monthly competition entries into the Annual Competition may wish to mount them in accordance with L & CPU Rules at the outset in order to avoid having to remount if selected for submission to the L & CPU after the Annual. (See also the rules for the Annual Competition).

12. Maximum size for Small Prints is 7.5” x 5” including any border. Members may, if they wish, subsequently enlarge and mount a small print for entry into the Annual Competition. However, images which have previously been entered as a large print in a competition may not subsequently be reduced in size and entered in to a Small Print Competition. Classes for Small Prints will be Standard and Intermediate with points awarded as in 18 below.

13. Entries for Digital Competitions should be submitted on CD, USB drive or via e-mail and each image must be 1024 pixels on the longest side, at a resolution of 72 ppi and saved as a JPEG at Level 12. The title should appear as the file name. The images may be taken with a digital camera or scanned from a slide, negative or print but must be the author's original work only i.e. no clip art or work of third parties may be added. E-mail entries MUST be sent to John Phipp at jphipp@manx.net and not to the Photographic Society e-mail address.

14.  Assignment entries must have been taken within the last three years and Open entries within the last five years.

15. A photograph may only be entered into one class, i.e. it cannot be entered as a slide and a print in the same year

16. Points will be given for the first six places in monthly competitions provided that there are at least twelve entries in the section. Placings will be reduced pro rata if there are less than twelve entries. No reduction in placings will be made for Small Print Competitions.

17.There will be only one class for Slide Competitions with points awarded as in 18 below.

18. The points will be awarded on the following basis:-

1st  - 6 points

2nd - 5 points

3rd - 4 points

4th - 3 points

5th - 2 points

6th - 1 point

Please note that mono images may be black and white or toned with a single colour and should be identified as Mono on the title labels.  Any image to which one or more additional colours have been added in a specific part of the picture must be entered into the colour section.

 

    Please note that no entries will be accepted after the date shown for submission in the programme.

 

Annual Print Panel Competition

1.      Entrants must be fully paid up members of the Society.

2.      All photographs must have been taken by the entrant.

3.      It is permissible for prints to be professionally made and mounted.

4.     Entries must not have been entered in any previous Annual Print Competition.

5.     Entries must be mounted on 20” x 16” [50.7 x40.6 cms] card (board).

6.     Prints may be flat mounted (i.e. placed on top of the card / board mounts) or window mounted (i.e. placed under card / board frames). The final thickness of the mount and pictures must not exceed 4mm.

7.     All entries must have a stiff backing the same size as the mount (if window mounted) and there must be no tape or adhesive present on any external surface in order to avoid damage to other panels.          

8.     Every entry should be titled and have the member's name printed on the container.

9.     Entries should consist of 5 or 6 prints on a theme of the photographer’s own choosing.

Please note that no entries will be accepted after the date for submission shown in the programme.

 

Annual Competition

1.      Entrants must be fully paid up members of the Society.

2.      All photographs must have been taken by the entrant.

3.      It is permissible for prints to be professionally made and mounted.

4.     Entries must not have been entered in any previous IOMPS Annual  Competition.

5.     By entering the Annual Competition, the photographer acknowledges that all of his or her entries are available for selection for the L & CPU Annual Competition. Any items selected will automatically be entered into that competition and may also be included in L & CPU Folios and/or selected to represent the L & CPU in PAGB competitions. By entering the Annual Competition, the member also accepts the L & CPU rules which are available on their website http://www.lcpu.org.uk  or from the Competition Secretary. These competitions are held off island. A photograph may only be entered into one class, i.e. it cannot be entered as a slide and a print in the same year. However, it may be submitted in an alternative form in another year.

6.     Entries must be submitted not later than the date shown in the programme, together with completed entry form and the appropriate fee per type of entry i.e. Mono Print, Colour Print or Slide as shown on the form.

 

PRINTS

1.     Maximum entry – TEN MONO PRINTS and TEN COLOUR PRINTS

Mounts may be any colour of standard card and be of any size up to 20 inches x 16 inches maximum with no minimum. This will comply with L & CPU rules as at February 2008. (See also 5 above and 5 below). However, for ease and  uniformity of display, we would prefer that only two sizes of mount are used (20in x16in and 16in x 12in)

2.      The final thickness of print and mount may not exceed 4mm.

3.    All prints must have a stiff card backing the same size as the mount (if window mounted) and there must be no tape or adhesive  present on any external surface.

4.      Every mount must have a label on the back stating:

       1. Entrant’s name   2. Title     3. Section number

       NB  Please leave the top right hand corner empty

5.      If any print selected to be sent to the L & CPU does not comply with current L & CPU rules, the photographer will be required to    remount the picture in order to comply with those rules. Currently  February 2008. These are as above.

 

      SLIDES

1.      Maximum entry –TWELVE SLIDES.

2.      Format must be 2"x 2", any type of mount including glass.

3.     Every slide must be correctly spotted and any masking material must   be internal.

4.     Every slide must bear the following information

1. Entrant’s name   2. Title     3. Section number.

 

DIGITAL

1.       Maximum entry – 10 images

2.        Submitted on CD, Email or USB Pen Drive

3.        Title to be part of the file name ie ******.jpeg

4.        Images to be 1024 pixels on the longest side at 72 ppi saved at

level 12

5.       Images may be scanned from a Print, Negative or Slide, but must be    the author’s original work. ie. no Clip Art or third party images may be  added.

6.        The author’s name may only appear on the CD or Pen drive.

JUNIORS

The sections listed below do not apply to Junior Members, all their images will be entered in a single section but all their entries must be mounted. Entry fees will be waived for Juniors.

Please note that submissions which contravene any of the above rules may be disqualified. No entries will be accepted after the due date for submission as printed in the programme.

 Sections 1, 2, 3, 4, & 8 are Prints. Sections 2D, 3D, 4D & 8D are Digital  Images.

     

REQUIREMENTS

Open (Sections 1, 2, 2D & 5)

Treatment should be essentially aesthetic, pictorial or graphical. Any subject matter is permissible except for true Natural History and straightforward Record. Still Life, Landscapes and Portraiture should be entered in this section.

Natural History (Sections 3, 3D & 6)

Pictures must be a sharp, accurate, representation of the species or subject matter. Creatures must be alive and free in the wild, not domesticated or in zoos. The following are not eligible for entry and will not be considered: sandwich shots; double exposures; photographs which consist in any way of more than one separate image; images which have been manipulated digitally or in the darkroom other than to adjust the technical quality only of the picture by means of burning, dodging, adjusting levels, sharpening or adjusting digital noise. Nothing may be added to or taken away from the image.

Titles must be specific and correct.

Geology, weather, climate and ecology are permitted but should be accurately titled to show their significance in the natural world. Cultivated plants or flowers are not acceptable.

Creative (Sections 4, 4D & 7)

May be defined as “altered reality”. Abstracts, derivations, or any image considered modern or contemporary, irrespective of the method used to produce it, should be in this section. Digital images must be from original exposures made by the photographer, and all manipulations must have been carried out by the photographer. Any use of copyright-free images is not acceptable.

Record (Sections 8, 8D & 9)

The accent must be on clearly depicted, informative pictures from which the subject is readily apparent. Titles must be factual and may include the date, location, circumstances or purpose. Architecture and industry fall into this category. No human figure or animal should appear in the image

Monochrome (Sections 1, 3, 3D, 8 & 8D)

Images may be black and white or toned with a single colour. Mono images to which one or more colours have been added in a specific part of the picture must be entered in the Creative Section.

Please note that any images entered in the wrong sections may be disqualified as may any that do not comply with the above requirements.
